Getting the right rope thickness is crucial. If it's too thin, the stove won't seal; if it's too thick, you won't be able to close the door. Here are three ways to identify the correct size.
Method 1: If You Know Your Stove Make and Model (Easiest)
If you know the exact model of your stove (e.g., "Charnwood C4" or "Stovax Stockton 5"), let us know.
• We will search our database for your model.
• We can often confirm the manufacturer's specified rope size.
• We can provide a direct link to the correct product.
Method 2: Measure Your Existing Rope
If you still have the old rope, you can measure it, but be careful:
• Important Warning: Rope compresses over time due to the heat and pressure of the door. A rope that started as 10mm may look like 8mm now.
• What to do: Take a photo of the rope with a tape measure across the end (showing the diameter) and send it to us. We will estimate the original size based on the compression.
Method 3: Check the Groove (Most Accurate)
Most stove doors have a groove or channel where the rope sits.
• Measure the width of the groove.
• The rope diameter usually matches the groove width (e.g., a 10mm groove usually requires a 10mm rope).
• Take a clear photo of the empty groove with a tape measure against it and send it to us for verification.

Common Questions & Confusion
Rope vs. Glass Seal – Which do I need?
Different parts of your stove use different seals. Be sure you are measuring the right one:
• Door Seal: Seals the metal door to the stove body. This is usually a thick rope (e.g., 8mm–12mm).
• Glass Seal: Cushions the glass against the metal door. This is usually a thinner rope (3mm–6mm) or a flat self-adhesive tape.
Should I use Rope or Tape?
• Use Rope when: There is a distinct groove or channel in the door, or when sealing the door to the stove body.
• Use Bedding Tape when: You are sealing the glass onto a flat surface with no groove. Tape usually has an adhesive backing for easy application.
See our article: "What's the difference between rope and bedding tape?"
How Much Rope Do I Need?
Our standard rope packs contain 2 meters, which is typically enough for:
• One glass panel perimeter (standard size).
• OR one door seal (standard size).
Tip: For double doors or very large stoves, you may need 2 packs. It is always safer to order slightly more than you think you need.
